Strange Leadership 40 Ways to Lead an Innovative Organization edition by Greg Atkinson Mark Batterson Religion Spirituality eBooks
The thesis of this book seems to be this: when you follow God, He will always lead you to change. God is all about change, and his leaders should also be about change. Innovation (change) is at the heart of the gospel. Here are a few quotes I enjoyed:* Prayer has got to be the hub of your church’s wheel, not a spoke in it.
* Do you want to see God do something new in your church and the lives of the people who attend your worship gatherings? Preach the gospel to them.
* The ... way [of] innovation happens is by making an intentional and strategic decision to grow and be innovative.
* “There is no growth without change, no change without loss, and no loss without pain.”

Strange Leadership 40 Ways to Lead an Innovative Organization edition by Greg Atkinson Mark Batterson Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I recently received an advance copy of Strange Leadership by Greg Atkinson. Greg is a pastor, church consultant, blogger, and now, author. His book is about innovation in ministry. Its title comes from a recognition that many innovations seem strange at the time of their introduction. Some of the Bible characters God used to speak to his people, and to speak to us today, were considered strange.
Greg has a Rolodex that is the envy of anyone in ministry. He has friends in every part of American evangelical church life. He capitalizes on these relationships to provide forty short chapters of insights about innovation that he has learned along the way.
Greg wants us to remember that all true innovation in ministry originates not in the heart of a leader, but in the heart of God. He provides ample biblical background for this reality. How many times does the Bible say God is doing something new? (That is a good Bible study idea.)
A profitable approach to this book is to read each chapter and consider how you would write that chapter for your own context. How would you put it in your own words? What insight is most powerful? What practice should you adapt and apply without merely photocopying?
Innovation is not limited to a few creative leaders. Anyone can innovate and become more creative. Greg reminds us that innovation requires thoughtful reflection. One of his favorite sayings is that we need to “chew on” ideas until they yield their full flavor. These forty chapters will make you think. They will lead you toward creating the preferred future you desire.
I find a lot of wisdom in the book and am glad a friend had recommended it. We will likely use it as a 40 day daily reading for a vision team this Fall.
Greg nails it as he helps us refocus on one simple world that can change every ministry initiative...INTENTIONAL. One of the beauties of being is intentional is that is does not equate to being more expensive...it simply means tou have thought something through and acting deliberately and with a specific reason and goal in mind.
Well done.
I have a copy of the original Strange Leadership by Atkinson. I appreciate the updates and revisions and his constant focus on leadership and innovation from a Biblical perspective.
Phenomenally profound read for those interested in the biblical perspective of leadership! Best 'work' read of the year! Who is the author of change theory and project management? The One who created the universe and orchestrated its grand design and our purpose in it!!
Greg's writing is accessible, engaging, practical, spiritual, and a phenomenal resource for ALL church leaders, regardless of age or ministry focus. I dove in to this book head first, ready for practical knowledge. What I found stopped me in my tracks. Greg takes the opening chapters of the book to focus the readers on the most important thing in church leadership the spiritual. This approach was a breath of fresh air and gave me renewed focus on my leadership. The practical knowledge followed, but the focus on the spiritual aspects of leadership was what I needed more that I realized.
Greg writes as a veteran in ministry and brings spiritual and practical knowledge that is helpful to all leaders.
I thank Greg for his great work and his heart for God. I have enjoyed all of his writings and look forward to more in the future!
